This site is free to read and is supported by advertising. This page explains who serves the ads and the rules we follow when placing them.

Who serves the ads

Display advertising on this site is served by Google AdSense and its advertising partners. Ads are labelled as advertising where they appear, and third-party ad serving is subject to the advertising network's own policies as well as this site's placement rules.

Where ads appear

Ads are placed in the flow of longer guides, between sections rather than on top of them. The rules we apply are:

• No ad overlays content, and no ad opens over a step you are following.
• No ad is placed at the very top of a numbered step list, where it would interrupt a procedure.
• Ads are clearly separated from page content and never styled to look like a link or a button.
• No pop-ups, no auto-playing audio and no auto-redirect scripts.
• Page content is always readable if you block ads entirely.

Editorial independence

Advertisers do not see pages before publication, do not choose which pages carry their ads through any arrangement with this site, and have no influence over what a guide recommends. Where a page contains affiliate links instead of, or as well as, advertising, that is disclosed on the page itself — see the affiliate disclosure.

Your controls

You can block advertising cookies and personalised advertising through your browser settings and your Google Ads settings. Blocking ads does not restrict access to any content on this site.
